Negotiate Your Offer

Congratulations on landing your offer! Don't leave money on the table. Learn how to negotiate and get paid what you're worth.

💬

"I was afraid to ask for more. But it was one of the highest ROI investments I've ever made.

I made over $15k by negotiating my Google offer which took less than 2 hours of time spent. That's $7500/hour, not even accounting for the 3 additional years I worked there.

In this module, we'll learn how to evaluate your offers, find your leverage, and negotiate effectively."

📊 My Offer Comparison

Here's how negotiation impacted my offers across the 5 offers I received:

CompanyInitial OfferAfter NegotiationIncrease
Capital One$150K$165K+$15K
Amazon$190K$206K+$16K
Audible$180KNever receivedN/A
Box$192K$210K+$18K
Google$201K$216K+$15K

Note: These numbers represent total compensation (base salary + bonus + equity + signing bonus). I used a strategic approach to negotiation:

1. Started with Capital One, using Amazon's offer as leverage. Although I knew they couldn't match it, I wanted to practice negotiating.

2. Then negotiated Amazon against Audible and Box offers

3. Finally used Box's offer to negotiate with Google

This cascading approach helped me maximize each negotiation, resulting in an average increase of $16K across the successful negotiations.

📊 Evaluate Your Offer

Before you negotiate, you need to understand what you're working with. Here's how to evaluate your offer:

💰 Total Compensation

Look beyond the base salary. Consider:

Base salary

Signing bonus

Equity/RSUs

Annual bonus

Benefits (401k matching, insurance, etc.)

ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan)

Future growth potential - what would your compensation look like in 5 years?

Evaluate all these aspects carefully. Don't take this lightly - this is a company you're committing to work for for at least a few months, and possibly even a decade or more. Don't jump in with your eyes shut.

📈 Market Research

Know your market value. Without this knowledge, you're negotiating blind:

Tech Industry: Levels.fyi for detailed compensation data, TeamBlind for anonymous discussions

Finance: Wall Street Oasis for finance-specific compensation and career advice

General: Glassdoor for company reviews and salary ranges

Networking: LinkedIn salary insights and direct conversations with peers

Get to know how much others are being paid for your role and location. Are you being lowballed? Are they paying you more than expected? Without this knowledge, you're negotiating on your heels.

Pro Tip: Look for data points from people with similar experience levels and in similar locations. Compensation can vary significantly based on these factors.

🤝 Sealing the Deal

Having multiple offers is your strongest leverage. Here's how to use them effectively:

🧙 Negotiation Dark Arts

Don't negotiate like you're trying not to offend. The company invested thousands of dollars into interviewing you. You have the upper hand.

Start negotiations with your second-choice company FIRST to set a baseline. Once they up the ante, counter your first choice initial offer with the higher offer.

Be transparent but professional about competing offers

Ask for specific improvements rather than just "more". Companies are more willing to budge on signing bonus, equity, etc. moreso than salary.

Don't be afraid to back out after signing. Yes, it's not ideal, but I did it with Box in order to work at Google while still maintaining a good relationship with my recruiter. Put yourself first.

⚖️ Final Considerations

Money isn't everything. If you're emotionally drained by negotiating or simply don't care about the money, don't negotiate. It's your call.

$10k is nothing compared to being miserable at work. Be smart when picking the company you sign.

Maintain good relationships with all companies involved. A recruiter who helped you get the offer might become a fantastic connection when you need to move again.

📝 Negotiation Scripts

If you don't feel confident negotiating, use these templates to navigate negotiations professionally while maintaining positive relationships. Each script is designed to be collaborative rather than confrontational.

🔁 Scenario 1: You Have Another Offer

Goal: Leverage comp from another company
Tone: Confident, collaborative

Subject: Compensation Alignment

Hey [Recruiter Name],

I'm excited about [Company Name] and the opportunity here. I wanted to be transparent — I'm currently moving forward in final stages with another offer that's coming in at [$X total comp], including a higher equity + base mix.

I'm making a long-term decision and want to make sure I'm not leaving anything on the table.

Is there room to bring this offer closer to that range so I can move forward confidently with [Company Name]?

Why it works:
• Anchors with data
• Soft but firm tone
• Gives them a clear number without posturing

🚫 Scenario 2: Market Research Without Competing Offers

Goal: Anchor with data without needing competing offers
Tone: Curious, data-driven

Subject: Compensation Alignment

Hey [Recruiter Name],

I've been doing some research on comp bands for this role and level, and I've seen packages in the [$X–$Y total comp] range at similar companies.

I'm really excited about the team and the work here. Is there any flexibility in the offer to bring it closer to that range?

I want to make sure I can commit long-term without having to revisit this conversation down the line.

Why it works:
• Shows seriousness without desperation
• Keeps the door open to improve comp even without leverage

A Final Word

Thank you for putting your trust in me to help you land your next job. I created this system to help the clueless kid I was five years ago - someone who didn't know how to write a resume, didn't understand how to play the application game, and was terrified he would never pass an interview, much less negotiate with these giant companies.

Getting into Google was one of the best moments of my life. After months of preparation and interview prep facing doubt and uncertainty, I can say that it was all worth it.

I've poured everything I've learned into these modules, from my own mistakes and successes. Whether you're just starting your career or looking to make a change, I hope this system gives you the confidence and tools to land the job you deserve.
