## Tweets That Guided How I Built this Weird, Leveraged Life

### 1. “Embrace accountability, and take business risks under your own name. Society will reward you with responsibility, equity, and leverage.”

At Google, I learned this the hard way.

As an entry-level engineer, you get assigned work. Safe work. Work that falls under someone else's project. I liked it that way. It was in my comfort zone.

But my promotion came from taking on a large project entirely under my own name. Scary? Absolutely. If it flopped, I'd be the single point of failure.

But since it succeeded, I owned the upside and that project fueled my promotion packet’s approval.

If you want upside, you’ll have to take on risk. That’s why I documented the high-stakes journeys of leaving Google and 50 Days to $1K and that’s why I was rewarded with attention and audience for it.

### 2. “Understand that ethical wealth creation is possible. If you secretly despise wealth, it will elude you.”

This one hit close to home.

Growing up with immigrant parents, money was the enemy. "We can't afford this." "We can't afford that." Money felt dirty. Evil. An oppressor.

That programming still sabotages me today.

I've barely monetized my personal brand because of this deep-rooted belief. Without it, I could have cleared $10K+ in these three months. Instead, I've gritted my teeth to sell what I did and have only made $4K.

This mental block has proven Naval's tweet painfully true. If you feel something similar, start working on it now. It's a process, but it's necessary.

### 3. “Code and media are permissionless leverage. They’re the leverage behind the newly rich. You can create software and media that works for you while you sleep.”

We're living in the golden age of one-person media businesses.

Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube algorithms now reward attention, not follower count.

My first reel on instagram went viral with over a million views at near 0 followers.
My recent YouTube video amassed over 35k views and “converted” 1k subscribers.

In 2018, you didn't need permission to post. In 2025, you don't even need permission to get put directly onto strangers’s feeds. Social media has become a pure meritocracy of attention.

Content and code: build once, sell forever. That's leverage. That's why I started building an audience.

### 4. “When you’re finally wealthy, you’ll realize that it wasn’t what you were seeking in the first place. But that’s for another day.”

This is an unteachable lesson.

Early in my creator journey, I spoke with someone making several million annually from Amazon FBA.

His words: "$600K/month feels just as empty as $30K/month."

My own story proves this. I got depressed making $350K at Google. Money alone cannot buy fulfillment.

We hear this constantly. Yet we always think we'll be the exception.
I'm no different. I'm still chasing more.

So what do we do?

Don't stop pursuing wealth. But enjoy the journey. Because once you make it, you'll wish you spent less time worrying about whether you would.

When I took leave from Google, I was mentally in the worst state of my life.

That desperation saved me. It forced me to act when "logic" kept me paralyzed.

But here's what keeps me up at night: What if I had been smarter about it? What if I'd prepared myself for it earlier?

I could've avoided the mental breakdown. The perceived financial stress. The sleepless nights wondering if I'd just torched my entire future for a fantasy.

Having experienced what it's like to burn the boats, I've reverse-engineered a playbook for my more risk-averse past self. If I had to quit my job again, this is exactly what I'd do.

# Why We Stay Trapped

Most people in corporate don't like their job. If you're part of the 1%, congratulations.

The rest of us tolerate the boss, the complete lack of agency over our schedule, and the soul-draining cog-like work for one reason: **survival.**

Strip away all the excuses why we don't quit and we're left with two primal fears:

**Fear #1: Running out of money** Money triggers our deepest survival instincts. No money means no shelter, food, or water. Your job becomes your lifeline. That's why you tolerate the daily commute, the unreasonable boss, and give your best energy away to meaningless work.

**Fear #2: Social exile** "What do you do? Where do you work?" are the first questions of almost every introduction. Your company and role becomes your status within the modern tribe. When you think of quitting, you fear others thinking you're a failure within the tribe. You fear your parents will be disappointed. You fear that others will see you as crazy.

As a social species, being ousted from the tribe historically meant death. It's in our programming to sacrifice our true personal desires to be liked and accepted.

And so in our minds, money and judgment are both abstractions of death. No wonder we get stuck.

# The Escape Triangle

Freedom isn't emotional. It's calculated.

We must systematically address the two primal fears of money and social exile - such that we can finally overcome the mental barrier that keeps us stuck in a life we don't want. That's what this practical and actionable framework is for.

I originally wanted to write a step-by-step guide to my past self, but I realized that is way too prescriptive and quite frankly unrealistic. Past Jim wouldn't follow the plan and even if he did, he probably wouldn't succeed. He lacks my unique new experiences and my recent failures. In similar fashion, you have your own story, your own mind. One composed of experiences that are far too unique for a one-size-fits-all guide on quitting your job.

So instead, here's a framework I call the Escape Triangle.

1. **Runway** – 12 months of expenses saved
2. **Revenue** – 100% of your monthly expenses from something you control
3. **Proof** – Your unique combination of story, skills, and brand that makes success inevitable and give you a safety net

You need a combined strength of 2.0 across the triangle's three corners. This could be two strong corners and one weak, or three medium-strength corners.

**Example:**

- Strong Runway - 12 months of expenses saved (1.0)
- Moderate Revenue - 50% of monthly expenses consistently (0.5)
- Moderate Proof - strong resume, one monetizable skill (0.5)

Together: 2.0 → safe to leap.

### Corner 1: Runway

Your accessible money. Savings, checking accounts, and liquid investments.

**Target:** 12 months of expenses

Why 12? Unexpected costs hit when you quit: health issues, insurance, business expenses. One health scare can put you out of work for months while spending heavily on medical bills.

**Action:** Audit your credit cards and checking accounts. Calculate your true monthly expenses, then simulate what they'd look like post-quit. I'd encourage you to lower your expenses as much as possible.

### Corner 2: Revenue

Money your side hustle/business brings in.

**Target:** 100% of monthly expenses in revenue

I recommend expense-based goals instead of "replace your job income." Here's why: If you can make revenue while your energy and time are being sapped by a full-time job, imagine what happens when you put your foot on the gas.

**Action:** Start building income streams now. Test, iterate, scale. Start small. Don't go building a city before you build your house.

### Corner 3: **Proof**

Your personal brand, resume, unique skills, and past wins that serve as evidence that you can make it and can find income in a worst-case scenario.

**Target:** Enough unfair advantages that if you were an investor, you would invest in you as an asset.

My proof includes: Google on my resume (opens doors if I need to go back), coding and video skills, past evidence of discipline (3:09 marathon, getting into Google), and my personal brand (opportunities come my way).

**Action:** List your unique skillsets and unfair advantages. Do they give you leverage? Do they form a safety net if things go sideways (e.g. can you readily find an income if needed)?

### **The Proof Amplifier: Your personal brand**

A personal brand gives you a tailwind on every single future thing you build, do, or sell. It's the only asset that makes you "luckier" over time.

- Want to freelance? Easier.
- Want to launch SaaS? Easier.
- Want to change industries? Easier.
- Want to ask for help? Easier.
- Want to make friends in new cities? Easier.

Building a personal brand is far from a passive or easy endeavor. You can build freedom without one. But cultivating mine has been the greatest career accelerant for my post-corporate life.

## Real Example: 24-Year-Old Me

Let me run the framework on my past self:

**Jim Tang, 24, Google software engineer**

- $100K accessible
- $0 revenue
- $4K monthly expenses
- Pretty good proof (Google, coding/video skills, historical success)

**Evaluation:**

- Runway: ✅ (25 months of expenses)
- Revenue: ❌ ($0 vs $4K needed)
- Proof: 🔶 (0.7/1.0)

**Score:** 1.7/3.0

Would I recommend Jim quit? Well, the excess runway provides a compelling case to leap despite the sub-2.0 score. But it would be much smarter to build revenue or more proof first. It's a lean towards yes from me, but depends on Jim's confidence and risk tolerance.

As you can see, it's not a black-and-white system. Use it as a guide, not as an absolute.

### What I'd Do Differently

If I could tell 24 year old Jim to do anything, it would be to start building his personal brand ASAP and to start exploring alternate ways of making money.

Instead of him escaping from corporate into video games, I'd have him plan his actual escape with this Escape Triangle framework.

If I started earlier, I would've better utilized some of the prime years of my life. Not just because I'd be wealthier, but because I would've been more alive.

## Your Action Plan

**Week 1-2:** Calculate your current Escape Triangle numbers

- Audit expenses and determine monthly needs
- List current accessible money
- Score your proof factors

**Week 3-4:** Start building revenue

- Identify 3 potential income streams
- Test the _simplest_ one first (don't go building a city before you've built a home)
- Document what works

**Monthly:** Reassess your triangle

- Track revenue growth
- Adjust expense projections
- Build proof

**The moment your triangle is at 2.0 strength, you have the green light.**

## Hard Truths

### This framework isn't for everyone

If you're in consumer debt with no monetizable skills, use your urgency to build leverage first. Don't quit to "find yourself" - that's how you end up trying to make money in sleazy ways out of desperation. Quit from a position of strength.

While it looked like a hail-mary play with no proven revenue, I quit with over $600k net worth and high-value skills after taking a 3-month leave from work. It felt like insanity at the time. But looking back now, my fear was a mile wide and inch deep.

### Planning will only take you so far

This still requires courage. No amount of planning eliminates fear. Even once you've reached the threshold you'll doubt yourself.

When you get to that point, you have to ask yourself, is this really what you wanted? If not, why did you do all of it in the first place?

The difference between dreamers and doers: **Taking action.**

Your Job Is Killing You Slowly (Here's Your Exit Plan)

The words that haunted me for years. I was the good kid who never spoke up, never took risks, never made waves. I was a supporting character in my own life - watching everyone else live while I stayed safely in the shadows.

But here's what I've learned: The difference between a supporting character and main character isn't talent, luck, or even circumstance.

In this newsletter, we'll go over exactly what that difference is and how to step back into your spotlight.

# **How You Become A Supporting Character**

> "If you're a friend of everybody, you're an enemy to yourself." - Mike Tyson

I always acted like the good kid. Terrified to make a mistake that would damage any reputation I may have. And so I rarely spoke.

I was just... there.

When that kid said those words about me, one part of me was seething.

But another part of me knew he was right.

I had strong views and feelings. But I never showed them to anyone but my closest friends. My brain determined that the risk of being disliked was greater than that of being myself.

## You started out as the main character

Every kid thinks they're the main character. In fact, they are incapable of thinking otherwise.

In psychology, they call this Theory of Mind. Until your brain develops to a certain point (between ages 4-7), you literally can't understand that other people's beliefs differ from your own.

That's what makes children so pure. They aren't acting.

Then social conditioning kicks in: parental pressure, the need to fit in. And we begin diluting ourselves.

## Stepping out of the light

If you're naturally agreeable - or socially conditioned to be - you begin trading authenticity for acceptance.

You get trapped in the psychological prison of other people's expectations:

- "Mom and Dad told me to do x so I can do y and finally do z."
- "If I don't have my job status, who am I?"
- "If I start pursuing what I _really_ want, people will think it's so **_out of character_**."

Because you're intelligent, you realize the world rewards compliance and punishes authenticity - at least in the short term. Eventually, external validation feels safer than self-trust.

Your intelligence betrays you into playing the role that's expected of you rather than the one you silently dreamed of. You become a method actor who forgot they were acting.

And so you step out of the spotlight, looking to others for how to live your own life.

# **The Makings of a Main Character**

> "Do not live for praise. Being good is independent of what is said about you." -Marcus Aurelius

Being the main character of your life means having agency - the capacity to act without asking for permission.

The misconception is that your life changes once an external result is met. Becoming a millionaire. Getting married.

That belief is dangerous. It's how you dissolve your own power.

## Focusing on Outcomes Will Sabotage You

I felt stuck for two decades because I was obsessed with outcomes.

I attached my decisions to things outside my control:

- How friends and family would respond to me quitting Google
- Whether people would follow me if I started posting
- The income I'd be making a year from now if I quit

Instead of focusing on what I _could_ control:

- Making the decision to quit Google
- Posting consistently and iterating
- Learning skills that will inevitably lead to independent income

This subtle shift changes everything. You can't force the cards. But you _can_ play your best hand.

When you hand the script over to things outside your control, you surrender your agency.

## Why Affirmations Don't Work

Most people think: Belief → Action. Get confident, then act.

In my experience, it's the opposite: Action → Belief → More Action.

At Google, I told myself I was free. I had options. I could leave if I wanted to. I reminded myself daily, desperately trying to feel in control. But deep down, I knew I was terrified.

That gap between affirmation fantasy and actual reality made me feel even more out of control of my life.

It wasn't until I actually took mental health leave from Google that I rekindled belief in myself.

From that day onward, I kept breaking past my limiting beliefs:

"I can't support myself without corporate." Made $4k online in my first few months.

"I'm too introverted for social media." Built 100k+ followers and hosted a meetup on the other side of the world.

Even now, I am aware I have limiting beliefs. But the difference now is that I understand the only way through them is action.

# **How to Become the Main Character (Again)**

This is your 4-step method to step back into your spotlight:

### **Step 1: Audit Your Script**

Most of your beliefs aren't even yours. They're hand-me-downs from parents, teachers, society.

Ask yourself:

- Where did this belief come from?
- Is this my voice or someone else's?
- How would I live if I didn't have this belief? Would I prefer that kind of life?

When I audited my "corporate job = the right thing" belief, I realized it came from my immigrant parents who equated stability with survival. Absolutely valid for them. We form our beliefs around our experiences.

But for me, as someone who grew up with privilege, more stability wasn't my purpose. Especially not at the cost of authenticity.

Question your beliefs.
Dive into your subconscious mind.

The beliefs that feel most obvious, the ones you think are just "reality", are usually the most inherited.

### **Step 2: Find Your Truth**

> "Never underestimate a man who overestimates himself" -Charlie Munger

Ask: "What would you do if you were guaranteed to succeed?"

If your answer doesn't feel at least slightly delusional, you're not being truthful.

And if you're not moving toward it, you're playing someone else's game.

If you don't know where to start, go back to childhood - what activities could you simply do all day? For me, one of them was making YouTube videos. Ironically, at 27 years old, I'm now creating content including videos.

### **Step 3: Accept your Cost**

Discomfort is the price of admission to your real life.

But here's the thing: discomfort is inevitable - whether you live authentically or not.

Everyone at some point must choose: Accept the discomfort of being who you really are? Or accept the pain of regret?

The number one regret of dying people: "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life that was true to myself."

Accept the cost.

### **Step 4: Take the One Action**

> "The very thing that you are looking for is what is holding you back. You want assurances. But as long as you’re looking for a guarantee, you will never believe in yourself." -Dr. Alok Kanojia

Identify your "filing for leave" moment - the one action that scares you most. That's probably your next move.

Modern risk isn't what our evolutionary brains believe. Taking leave doesn't mean starvation. Posting authentic thoughts online doesn't end careers.

Resolving to quit my job with no plan felt insane. In hindsight, it feels trivial.

Don't wait for belief to create action. Take action to create belief. Trust that reality bends to meet conviction, not the other way around.

## The Unfair Modern Advantage

We live in the greatest era for individual sovereignty in human history.

In the past, living as your own main character simply wasn't possible for most people. Hierarchies, slavery, and the absence of leverage except for the elite.

Now? ChatGPT teaches you _anything_. You can reach millions of people through content with just your _phone_. No permission needed. No Harvard MBA, connections, or trust fund required.

Modern society now rewards authenticity over perfection. Consistency over brilliance. Courage over credentials.

This is the most opportunity-rich time in human history.

How to Become the Main Character of Your Life


Every budding creator dreams of going viral.

When my first instagram reel took off, my brain chemistry literally changed overnight. I felt hypomanic, unstoppable, on top of the world.

But here’s the truth no one prepares you for:

> Going viral is just the beginning.

And if you mistake it for the end goal, you’ll crash and burn.

Before I tell you the keys to my virality (and no, they're not cheap growth hacks), let’s unpack the hidden dangers you should expect.

# **The 3 Truths No One Tells You About Going Viral**

Early on, I believed:

"Once I hit 10K followers, 50K, 100K... I'll have it all figured out."

That was a lie.

But having hit these milestones from several viral moments, I have experienced and seen major pitfalls that I believe everyone building a personal brand should know:

## **Pitfall #1: Chasing virality is the best way to never get it**

Now, this isn't one of those spiritual woowoo lessons. It's practical.

When you treat going viral as the primary goal, you build a shaky foundation for your creative career.

What chasing virality looks like:

- You position yourself as a know-it-all
- You burn out after 20 posts of no views
- You over-edit and clickbait your content

Here's the thing: your first viral hit is not the finish line. It's the start of the real game. Don’t destroy your engine just to get there.

## **Pitfall #2:** **Going viral without a system breaks you**

Virality shakes weak foundations.

For months, I've been stretched thin:

- Filming, editing, and posting across platforms
- Replying to DM's, comments, emails
- Building resources and testing offers
- All while moving, travel planning, and going abroad

Last week, my biggest hit of virality came. While I was sick. And behind on all the above.

Most days ended up being just me in an Airbnb, trying to write, film, edit, manage ops, prep a meetup, respond to DMs, and coughing through strategizing my next few weeks.

**That’s not freedom. That’s a fragile hustle.**

## **Pitfall #3:** **Viral growth outpaces identity growth**

When I started, I was tweeting to nobody from my bedroom.

Last week, 15 strangers showed up to my meetup in Tokyo. Some had followed me since the beginning of my “50 Days to $1K” challenge.

That meetup was when I realized… this sh\*t is real.

When you experience viral growth, you'll feel watched. You'll get your first hate comments. You'll be tested.

“Am I still being me? Or am I just performing?”

**External growth will outpace your identity growth.**

And as that gap widens, you have two options:

1. Know exactly who you are.
2. Figure it out while the world is watching.

I’ve been doing the second one. You’ll need to choose your own path.

# **How to Go Viral (Without Getting Burned)**

**I want you to go viral.**

The point of the above warnings were not to dissuade you from trying to grow your personal brand.

But the reality is your first viral moment is when Pandora’s Box is opened.

So here's the practical advice I would give myself if I were starting over and wanted to **go viral without burning out**:

## **1. Process-Oriented Goals**

When I first started posting on X, I posted 10+ times a day with no expectation. Just a promise to myself to post every day.

I posted over 300 times and barely got any traction. But I never once thought to stop trying to build my personal brand.

When I started _50 Days to $1K_, I brought the same mindset. No expectations. Just a promise to show up for 50 days, no matter what.

Ironically, the very first reel I posted from that challenge went viral.

If followers were my only goal…

- I would’ve burned out after the first 300 ignored tweets.
- I would’ve quit after 40 days of slow growth after an anomaly breakout moment.
- I would’ve stopped writing these newsletters after spending 10+ hours on editions that were seen by just 50 people.

But I trusted the process, not the outcomes.

Here’s the truth:

Going viral is inevitable…. _if_ _you iterate long enough_.

**Treat consistency as the win. Ship → Learn → Repeat.**

## **2. Systemize Content**

I won’t pretend I have this one all figured out.

But I did have some minimum viable processes that enabled me to produce content at the rate that I did (93 instagram posts in 72 days):

- Repeatable content formats (talking heads, narration over b-roll, carousels, etc.)
- Editing systems (music bank, b-roll sources)
- Weekly commitments (newsletter, project: freedom episodes)

These are the ones I wish I had in place now that I’m playing catch up:

- Filming + editing schedule (so it’s not haphazard)
- Emergency content buffers (backup posts for when life happens)
- DM and Email processes (time-bound engagement each day)

If I could go back and tell myself one thing, it would be this:

**Don’t avoid systems just because you’re early.**

Build systems as you go. Test them out. Batch content. Reuse formats. Iterate and improve them over time.

## **3. Play to Win**

I used to play to avoid losing.

This mindset permeated everything I did.

I anxiously held onto money, avoided risks, stayed on a default path I didn’t actually want.

But every significant success I’ve had in life, including each moment of virality, followed a decision to bet on myself without guarantees.

I was terrified to leave Google without income.
I was terrified to show my face on social media.

But it was the combination of those two decisions that created my breakthrough.

Now, I’m absolutely not saying to quit your job.
But to grow your personal brand, and to succeed in life in general, you must shift your attitude to play offense.

For example:

- Actually write or film your first post and just _post it_
- Invest the money for tools that will 3x your output (I use ChatGPT Plus and CapCut Pro to save me _hours_ each week)
- Speak your mind on topics you’re scared of in your content—chances are, other people are too and want to feel seen

I recently made the mistake of playing defense by avoiding hiring help. Now I’m facing the consequences with:

- 30+ hours/week editing
- Hundreds of unanswered DMs
- No room for strategy or rest

I’m not saying to rush to spend all your money. I’m not saying to make rash decisions. But hold this mindset:

**Play to win.**

# Why It's All Worth It

What No One Tells You About Going Viral


There’s a leverage vehicle available today that didn’t exist 10 years ago.

You don’t need a team. You don’t need capital.  
You don’t even need permission.

You just need your story.

I’m talking about your personal brand.

I was working a $350K job at Google, but I felt like a fraud in my own life.

So on March 31, I launched a public challenge:

**Make $1,000 online in 50 days** **before I quit my job.**

No team. No audience. Just me, my story, and the internet.

What prompted this whole thing were just two core beliefs:

1. I wasn’t going to survive another year living an inauthentic life (in corporate)—much less a decade.
2. There had to be a better way. Because if not now, in the highest leverage era in history, then when?

After years of analysis paralysis, I stopped hedging and took the plunge.

I was ready to own it all: the upside if it worked, the consequences if it didn’t.

I wanted to build a body of work that I could point to and say:

_"Look, here's how it all began."_

When I started, many resonated. Many called it idiotic.

**50 days later:**

- $2,317 in revenue
- 40,000+ new followers
- And a new identity

That momentum hasn’t stopped. I’m writing this from a cafe in Tokyo, two months later.

But this isn’t a flex. My life is far from perfect.

This newsletter is my message in a bottle to my past self.
The version of me who didn’t know where to start.

# **You’re Sitting on a Perfect Product**

Let’s begin with the biggest lie you probably believe:

> “Why would anyone buy from me?”

You already have a product.
Something people would _happily_ pay for.
You just haven’t realized it yet—because it feels too normal.

You’re convinced it has to be groundbreaking. Original. A work of genius.

It doesn’t.

Here’s what Future You launched during 50 Days to $1K:

- No expertise. Just my own past experience with optimizing my Hinge profile.
- An experiment, to see if I can build something users actually want.
- A user accidentally paid $10 through a bug. (I refunded him.)
- 90+ users. Zero ad spend.

**Product 2: The Job Offer System**
An info product built on how I landed 5 tech offers (Google, Amazon, etc.).

- I doubted myself. No "guru" status, market felt saturated.
- Built and launched anyway.
- $500+ in 6 days before I made it free.

**Product 3: SWE Offer Vault**
A curated collection of resumes, negotiation tips, and behind-the-scenes breakdowns from "average" software engineers who broke into tech.

- Again: Isn't all this info online already?
- But not with this angle, style, or voice.
- Launched with Reels + auto-DM funnel (Stan).
- $1,300+ in 24 hours. ($2,000+ as of today).

**What’s the pattern?**

None of these were genius ideas.
I just solved my own problems of the past.
And I built them in public.

Not as an expert. Not in a completely unique fashion. Just someone who spoke their story and spun that into their product.

> **Your mindset is holding you back.**
>
> You don't need rare 1% skills. You don't need to be the LeBron James of a given topic. Just pair what you know with your story instead of regurgitating the same age-old advice. That's how a product goes from generic to unequivocally unique.

When you look for your next idea, use this process:

1. List skills that you have that feel like **common sense** to you. That’s where your deep skill lies.
2. Within these skillsets, find problems that caused you real pain.
3. Package the shortcut you wish you had. The more mistakes you’ve endured, the better your product will be.

Then ask: _Which one excites you the most?_

If you don't have the luxury of financial runway, then go where the money is. Just know that when it comes time to sell, your passion and belief in a product will show itself.

### **Here's the takeaway**

You’re underestimating what you already know. Landing a job in your industry. Knowing a second language. Even expertise with a video game. Someone 3 steps behind you will _pay_ to fast-forward—if they trust you can get them there.

And that trust starts with you trusting _yourself_ enough to build something.

The good news is you already have value. The bad news is: that’s not enough.

Because if no one sees it, it doesn’t exist.

# **Distribution First**

**It doesn’t matter how good your product is if no one sees it.**

SwipeIQ was dead on arrival.

I tried cold DMs. Reddit posts. Discord servers. Crickets.

Then I launched the 50-day challenge and got 80+ users in a few days.

Same product. Different distribution.

If you don’t have distribution, you have two options:

1. **Buy it** (ads)
2. **Build it** (build an audience)

I chose #2.

Because a personal brand compounds. Your audience grows with every post, every insight, every product you share. They follow _you_, not just your offer. Instead of starting from zero with each new product or service, you keep your audience across your life.

**It’s why Prime**, Logan Paul and KSI’s hydration drink, hit _$1 billion_ in year two. No one’s buying sickly sweet electrolytes. They’re buying the branding behind it.

**It’s why Ur Mom Ashley** (yes, that’s her handle) launched a matcha brand and made $300K in 3 minutes.

Her audience watched her for years. Then they watched her build a company.

Brand trust at scale is a cheat code.

### **How I Build Now**

After two months of prioritizing audience-building and reaching 50k+ across platforms, this is a system I've arrived at:

1. **Tell the story of a pain you lived.**
2. **See if it resonates.**
3. **Build the solution you wish you had.**
4. **Document the arc as you build.**

I thought this challenge would be tactical. It became existential.

I had a simple path to $1,000 and burned it down for the sake of authenticity.

What I learned in 50 days of quitting corporate, growing an audience, and starting from scratch.

How I Gained 45K Followers and Made My First $1K Online


I was a video game–addicted, overweight kid with zero self-belief.

Now I'm a Google engineer, a creator with a 25k+ audience, a runner who has run a marathon in 3:09, and a lifter who has broken the 1000lb club. Most importantly, I now finally believe in myself.

I’m not saying this to flex or to try to convert you into the school of Jim Tang-ism. I’m saying this because I want to frame the upcoming conversation. If you’re in the middle of a major life change, or on the edge of starting one, this edition of Escape Velocity Newsletter will walk you through the process of relaunching your life.

# **The Hole I Dug**

I wasn’t born with discipline. Or confidence. Or even basic life hygiene.

In early life, I fried my reward system early with video games, pornography, junk food, and escapism.

This was a normal day in high school for me: I'd grab a family-size bag of Lays BBQ chips and a full bag of Trolli sour gummy worms and disappear into League of Legends until 1am. After that: hours of anime and YouTube in bed, then four hours of sleep before stumbling through school.

I was overweight and anxious. I avoided speaking. I felt insecure about how I looked. Shame dictated my personality, my self-esteem, my entire reality.

Over those years, I tried everything:

- Quitting video games cold turkey
- Crash dieting on chicken breast and salad
- Binging self-help content without action

Each attempt failed. I’d either do nothing or make progress just to slip back. Years later, I finally understood why.

# **Why 95% of Transformations Fail**

According to a study by Richard Wiseman, 88% of New Year’s resolutions fail within two weeks. I’d estimate the long-term failure rate is likely 95%+.

Why? Based on my own lived experience, two main reasons:

#### 1. **You Want a Guarantee, So You Don't Start**

Change requires giving something up. And we’re afraid of sacrificing without certainty of payoff.

So we delay action until the “perfect moment”. New Year. Birthday. After this project. When things settle down. Almost like we’re looking for **permission**.

But waiting is the trap. Even when conditions are ideal, people still fail.

If there were guarantees, you’d already have what you want.

#### 2. **You See Change as Temporary, So You Regress**

Most people treat change like a season. A sprint. A diet. Like putting on a costume until you're ready to take it off. Something you _try_ until you can go back to “normal” with an upgrade.

I did this:

- Quit games to gain financial freedom, just to one day go back to gaming
- Got fit to binge junk food without shame
- Left Google to make more money by working less

Each time, I failed. Until I accepted that real change is permanent - it’s not a costume. The moment I was ready to give up video games forever is when I let them go.

Change is a shedding of identity. With no promise of what replaces it.

Everything worth having in life requires confronting uncertainty.

# **How to Actually Change Your Life**

Before you act, it's essential to figure out your direction.

## **Step 0) Define Your Core Values**

Define your 3 core values (ChatGPT is surprisingly good at helping with this). These will guide your decisions during uncertainty and doubt.

My 3 core values:

- Self-actualization
- Truth-seeking
- Freedom/autonomy

If you look at my major decisions -joining Google, quitting Google, chasing fitness, creating content- they all ladder up to those values.

Your life’s vision comes from knowing your values.

Once you've established your values, you're ready to begin relaunching your life step-by-step.

## **Step 1: Focus on One Thing**

When looking back at all my transformations, there is a common thread that led to my success each time:

They were all preceded by relentlessly tunnel visioning on a singular goal. **Not** by multitasking.

When I targeted Big Tech, I did it because it would unlock everything:

- Faster financial security
- Afford better gyms, nutrition, and doctors
- Credibility for all future ventures

Identify the single goal that unlocks the next version of you. Write it down. What would your life look like if you never tried? If you tried and failed? If you succeeded?

Once you’ve named it and evaluated the cost-benefit, ask yourself: Can I afford not to pursue this? If the answer is no, then it’s time to go all in.

## **Step 2: Create Stakes**

The other common thread in all my transformations was **accountability**.

Change sticks when there’s something to lose.

I applied to jobs instead of endlessly prepping. I trained for races instead of just running. I announced my 50-day challenge instead of keeping it private.

Real stakes accelerate growth. Especially when they scare you.

If you're up for a challenge, documenting your journey online is a cheat code to personal growth. Failing publicly scares me. That’s why I’ve been able to work the way I have these past 43 days. Negativity bias is real.

## **Step 3: Don't Just Do. Become.**

The last common thread is that every transformation consisted of an identity shift.

When I landed five tech job offers, it was because I made job hunting my new full-time job. When I became a runner, it was because I _ran every day_ (except Sunday). Right now I post every day and write this newsletter every week.

Shift your identity from someone who is _trying_ said thing into becoming someone who simply _does_ said thing.

To do this, I recommend one non-negotiable action every day to get the action-identity flywheel spinning.

Daily Action → Identity Reinforcement → Daily Action → Identity Reinforcement

Until this daily habit and identity become locked in place, you may live an “unbalanced” life for a while. That’s a feature, not a bug. When I was running, my life was dictated by it - weather, races, training plans, etc. Balance comes after transformation. Not before.

Once your new identity is internalized, you will have learned the necessary skills to keep the flywheel going on autopilot. That's when you can rebalance and start on a new goal.

## **How Long Does it Take?**

If you truly dedicate yourself, change comes faster than you think.

For some reason, 5 months seems to be the sweet spot for me. It took me

- 5 months to job hunt and land my job at Google.
- 5 months to run my first half marathon, work through therapy, and quit video games.
- 5 more months to run my first marathon, plan my escape from Google, and take my first steps out.

We all have different starting points. I was in a deep hole of despair. Maybe you're in a better place. Maybe you're even deeper. Regardless, I promise you if you give yourself just 5 months of honest effort, you can relaunch your life.

If you compound this level of change over two years you will become unrecognizable.

# **Look Forward to Failure**

We all want the Rocky montage moment where we turn our lives around in one fell-swoop. That simply does not happen.

But failure is not the enemy. Inaction is.

You will fail. You will doubt. You will relapse. But you now know the difference between necessary failure (growth) and avoidable failure (hedging, hesitation, paralysis).

Failing means you're moving. If failure hurts, then you actually care about what you're doing. Above all else, failing means you still have more journey left to enjoy.

The No-BS Way to Relaunch Your Life


> We aren’t making a living, we’re making a dying.

I spent nearly 5 years in corporate making a dying.

Waking up with a feeling of meaninglessness. Opening a calendar and email filled with contents I couldn't care less about. All for a few fleeting hours of freedom before going to sleep. Then doing it all over again.

I'd dream of retiring early - when my real life would begin. How many more days? How many more years? ...Decades?

# The Buried Dream

On social media, I was exposed to stories of people quitting their job to “find themselves”, to build their startup, to pursue their true passion.

"That's foolish," I'd say to myself. 95% of businesses fail. Something like that, right?

But deep down, I envied their conviction. I dreamed of a life true to myself. But accepting it was possible would’ve invalidated everything I’d already sacrificed.

So I kept suffering in silence while everyone told me I had it all.

Consider this: If your actions are misaligned with who you are, but you continue them day after day, month after month, year after year, what does that teach your mind?

You don’t respect yourself.
You don’t believe you have agency.
You’d rather trade the essence of your soul for a "successful" life you never actually chose.

The longer you fight yourself, the deeper these beliefs embed into your brain.

# Recognize the Matrix

Most people avoid confronting the reality that they're going to work corporate for 40 years. _40 years._

People typically fall into one of two archetypes:

1. **Sleepwalkers**. These people either accept they’re trapped or avoid thinking about it. They use consumerism and escapism to cope, trading their future for comfort in the present.
2. **Strategists**. These people take advantage of the rules within the system to become financially independent. They sacrifice short-term pleasures to invest in a future life of freedom or to maximize their earnings and status. The best do both.

But there's a third group that goes unnoticed. In fact, when we see them, we place them in a different category - as if they're not even playing the same game.

## **The Success Paradox**

In big tech, I met senior folks with millions in the bank who didn’t quit despite loathing their jobs. Why?

After thinking deeper, it made perfect sense. The same things that kept me tethered: Pay, prestige, beliefs. They all run even deeper for them.

As you continue to win at the corporate game, the cost of leaving gets higher and higher. Promotions, compensation increases, social status, and the growing fear of "it's too late".

It makes sense why companies like Google and Meta pay so much and offer such a compelling ladder to climb. It’s not out of generosity.

## **Breaking the Illusion**

Most of us assume working a job is just a given. Think about how we introduce ourselves: "What do you do? Where do you work?"

To break the illusion, you must begin by realizing it's all a choice.

Even the mundane like brushing your teeth or picking what you eat is a choice. Working your job is a **choice**.

If you don’t realize this, you are unknowingly outsourcing your life. To your parents, to your friends, and the crowdsourced expectations of strangers (social norms).

So what’s the third archetype?

**Truth-seekers**: people who design a life that can sustain them through authentic self-expression. Often through asymmetric leverage.

Some case studies on this archetype:

- Pieter Levels - Solo SaaS founder who loves to code and earns millions per year through consumer SaaS products.
- Dan Koe - One-man business who makes money by synthesizing his thoughts into content through his passion for writing.
- Chloe Ting - Built a fitness empire through a massive personal brand with free workouts and evergreen assets.
- Chris Williamson - Club promoter turned podcaster who distills his love for knowledge and ideas through one of the largest podcasts in the world.

None of them followed a perfect plan. None of them have perfect lives. But each shows a different way to win by betting on yourself and to claim **agency**. Largely through the use of asymmetric levers such as content, software, and audience.

The evidence is before our very eyes. Yet we refuse to believe it could be us.

## **What if You Won the Lottery?**

If I won the lottery, I’d probably buy a house, hire a chef, fly business class, and feel euphoric... for about a month.

Then hedonic adaptation would run its course and winning the lottery would become the worst thing that ever happened to me.

I’d be robbed of my hero’s journey. Forever tainted by a cheat code.

That’s how I realized: the journey is all there is. Attaining wealth isn’t the end. Cliché as it is, it is undeniably true. How many goals have you already achieved that you said would make you happy?

If the journey is all there is, why deprive yourself of living the one you actually want?

# Your Way Out

We get caught up in thinking money is the goal. What we really want is something money provides: Sovereignty - the power to choose.

The best part is, you don't need millions to start building it.

So how do you attain sovereignty?

If you’ve read this far, you’ve already taken the first step: becoming aware that it's possible.

The next step is defining life's vision. How?

One approach is to simply do nothing. Do nothing long enough and your subconscious will find a way to tell you if you’re not pushing towards your real purpose.

That's what happened to me. It may take the form of a mid-life crisis, depression, or just persistent, ambient feelings of discontent. That's if you're lucky. It forces you to change, to figure it out.

If you're unlucky? You live a life that's just barely tolerable for decades. You wake up at 65 and wake up one day realizing it was never really yours.

But if I could speak to my past self from a year ago, I wouldn’t want him to do nothing. It’s a painful and slow path. Instead, I'd ask myself these 3 questions, and I encourage you to do the same:

1. Do you wake up with a sense of purpose?
2. If money wasn't a factor, would you be working your job?
3. Are you in pursuit of a life you actually want? Or are you simply looking for “less bad”?

If you answered yes to all 3, congrats, you’ve already won. If not, keep reading.

# What Happens When You Leave?

We’ve discovered your current job isn’t your true life. But leaving feels insane.

How could it ever be a logical decision?

I’ll tell you what happened to me after I posted the first 50 Days to $1K reel:

I’ve been sleeping 5 hours a night (don't copy this) and still waking up with a sense of purpose, of drive. Despite all the uncertainty, despite the countless failures, despite the lack of income, I feel more _alive_.

When I told my parents I was going to quit Google, they tried to talk me out of it for hours. Later, my Dad told me something: On that car ride home, they agreed on one thing: **"Jim's eyes had life in them again"**.

Working a job felt like catching water from an empty glass. Working for myself feels like trying to catch the overflow.

So before you dismiss leaving as reckless, consider the real cost of staying:

1. Every day of silent suffering is one you’ll never get back.
2. If you can earn six figures doing what you _hate_, imagine what’s possible doing what you _love_.

Escape Velocity starts with the belief that you can have it all.

## **But Don't be Reckless**

If you quit your job without financial runway, you have guts, but you're gambling. Some people can pull it off - just look at the Hormozis. But that’s not my story

If you have a few years of runway and full commitment? You will:

- Stop negotiating with yourself every day.
- Build a life that reflects who you are.
- Learn to create value of your own — not just deliver it for someone else.
- Realize that you are in control of your life.
- Stop wondering _what if_.
- Have new problems. More than before. But they’ll be yours.

Most people don't fail to escape. They just never decide to.

Why I Left My $350K Job at 27 — and Why Most Never Will


Ever since I remember, I felt an extreme scarcity around money.

That trait led to a failure that unlocked my subconscious mind.

Let me tell you what happened.

# The Moment Things Snapped Into Focus

I was on a real mentorship “sales” call — not practice, not planning.
If I closed this client I’d blast way past my $1000 goal.
This was it.

The person on the other end was smart. Driven.
5x more experienced than me as a software engineer, yet plagued with the exact same fear that trapped me for years.

About halfway through the call, I knew I could help them. To finally crystalize their dream and take real steps towards it after burying it under years of self-sabotage.

But when it came time to close?

I froze.

A deep guilt surfaced.

I felt wrong asking for money in exchange for helping someone. Disgusted, even.

I didn’t just lack sales skills.

I had a belief system that was subconsciously running my life.

# How Money Was Secretly Running My Life

I grew up in a frugal household.

“Can I get this video game?”
“We can’t afford it.”

“Can we go out to eat?”
“Eating at home is cheaper.”

Money was an oppressive dictator.

Without even realizing it, I adopted an unconscious rule:

> "If you chase or charge money, you're a bad person."

It twisted itself into decisions. My self-worth. My future.
I attached my intrinsic value to the number on my payroll.
I correlated the safety of my very existence, to my savings and investments.

Villainizing money made me feel righteous.
Moreover, it let me hide from an even scarier fear:

> “What if I tried to be rich… and failed?”

As a kid, that perception of lack made me want nothing more than to be rich.
To retire my parents, to buy our family a big house, to fly first class.
To buy all the video games and restaurant food I wanted.

When they asked me what I wanted to be, I said, “money manager”.
They told me it was a real job title (it’s not). It just sounded rich.

Yet, I buried that desire for over a decade — fear disguised as virtue.

If money was evil, I didn’t have to test whether I could succeed.
If money was evil, I could stay exactly where I was — safe, unseen, unchallenged.

Today, my parents are thankfully retired — but the boy who dreamed of helping them do it never made it in time.

# Why I Made the Job Offer System Free

At first I felt excitement.

Then I felt discomfort.

I started sabotaging. Second-guessing. Feeling like I was "grifting" even though I knew the product will change people’s lives, if they truly were seeking said change.

# What Almost Kept Me Stuck (And Might Be Keeping You Too)

# The 3 Pillars of Escape Velocity

> Escape velocity is the velocity needed for a body to escape from a gravitational centre of attraction without undergoing any further acceleration.

## 1) Define the New, Destroy the Old

Define exactly what it is you want out of life — no censorship, no shame.

Then the harder part: **\*accept it\***. Acceptance begins to burn the old self — the one who believed they weren’t capable, deserving, or ready.

Without brutal honesty about what you actually want, you stay stuck orbiting a life you no longer want to live.

## 2) Build the New

Once you accept your vision, you won’t know exactly how to get there.

You’re not supposed to. You pick a direction and go anyway.

You stumble, you fumble, you keep getting back up.

You begin to realize your old limiting beliefs are crumbling.

## 3) Accelerate Until Free

Once you find your footing you’ll find you built a system. You’re running now.

Small wins stack into momentum.

Momentum compounds into belief.

Belief compounds into identity.

You don’t just “do” anymore — you become.

You run for weeks, months, years.

Until one day, you look around and realize your old self is just a distant memory.

## **A Real Example: How I Got My Job at Google**

At my first job I was making $90k — already very good money.
Then I found out through levels.fyi that new grads at Google, Facebook, and Amazon making double that.

…That’s possible?

Not for me, I thought. I’m not worth that much. I’m not smart enough.

**But deep down, I wanted it.**

Here’s how the 3 pillars played out:

**Define the New, Destroy the Old**: I admitted I wanted to make more money. I admitted I wanted to have prestige and adulation of my friends and family. But doesn’t that make me vain? I could either accept truth or be “virtuous” and live a lie. I accepted truth.

**Build the New**: I studied nights and weekends. I could barely solve Easy problems on LeetCode. I practiced coding interviews alone in my parents’s basement. I got rejected from dozens of companies. I failed my first interview spectacularly. I kept going.

**Accelerate Until Free**: After several months of consistent action, coding, behavioral prep, applications, mock interviews, I landed 5 job offers — including Google.

The hardest part wasn’t cracking the interviews.
It was spending 1.5 years mustering up the courage to accept my desires and give myself a chance.

I have the same brain as back then. The same soul. But my beliefs are different.

This year, I was set to make over $300K at Google — as the same person who once accepted $90K without question.

We don’t just fear failure.
We fear what it means if we succeed.
That the reality we once knew, was never the truth after all.

# “The highest leverage thing I’ve done so far is build an audience.”

A few weeks ago, I was building my first SaaS: [SwipeIQ.io](https://SwipeIQ.io).

I kept hearing the same advice in the indie hacker space: “Build in Public”.
But I didn’t want to be that guy — an _influencer_ who shills a SaaS.
I wanted to do it the “right” way: code, landing pages, paid ads, clean execution.

But in the back of my mind this quote I had heard lingered:

> Code and media are permissionless leverage. They're the leverage behind the newly rich. You can create software and media that works for you while you sleep.

So I figured I’d try building in public anyway—hedging my bets.
I posted 10 times a day on X for a month.
I got 70 followers—is this really worth it?

I DM’d someone further down the path—an ex-Snap engineer with 8 apps on the App Store and 17k followers on X.

I asked:
**“Did building your personal brand/audience end up helping your SaaS goals directly? How would you distribute your effort between the two?”**

Her response:
**“The highest leverage thing I’ve done so far is build an audience.”**

That exchange planted a seed

Six days later, that seed sprouted into the first 50 Days to $1K post and the “I’m Quitting Google” reel.

Gained over 3,000 Threads followers from this single post.

Gained over 10,000 instagram followers from this single reel.

And just like that, the experiment stopped being theoretical.

**The power of media:**

Last week I made SwipeIQ free.

This week someone who found SwipeIQ through my old reels had _somehow found a way to pay for it ($10)_ due to a bug that led them to the payment page—I refunded him. I somehow made my first sale thanks to passive distribution from content.

This week I’ve gotten connected to creators and entrepreneurs who are further down the path. Reconnected with old friends who saw my stuff and reached out. All just for broadcasting myself through content.

I used to be anti-social media.
Now I think that building a personal brand is worth it for basically anyone.

Give it a shot.
DM people.
Post something online.
You think you’re shouting into the void—until you’re not.

You never know what doors might open.

# Week 2 Summary - Systems

**Total revenue:** $10…? (Nope, still $0).
**Main lever pulled:** Systemizing content.
**Largest outcome:** “3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Interviewing” reel: 100k+ views → 1,000+ follower conversions
**Focus:** Scaffolding for content consistency and future offers.

If week 1 was about finding where to dive (content), week 2 was about testing the waters, finding where to go deep.

I thought, “What makes content valuable?”

We’re used to seeing entertainment-style content, where people are performing on camera, pulling off crazy stunts, or spending absurd amounts of money, all with top-tier editing and videography.

I knew I couldn’t compete in that domain. And I didn’t want to. So I tried something else—just share information that others would be interested in knowing. That’s why I put out 3 tech-related talking head reels.

The results? People watched—and I didn’t have to do any crazy edits or perform on camera.

Everyone has their own unique set of knowledge and experience. And you can spread it just by talking to the camera.

So I think I’ve found the direction for next week. No fancy editing, no fancy b-roll. Just me talking about topics I think others would find valuable.

## Lessons Learned

### 1. Content & Code are Force Multipliers

SwipeIQ getting its first payment—even after I hadn’t touched it for a week—opened my eyes to the power of content + SaaS as a combo.

They’re both forms of permissionless leverage: products and media that can be replicated and distributed at no marginal cost, working together passively.

I imagine my endgame being a B2C SaaS targeted at my audience. This week showed me how building that audience is a springboard for any offer or business you have in the future.

### 2. Things that are obvious to you may not be obvious to others—that’s your domain

This week, I tested a talking head reel about job hunting. It went semi-viral.

When I was job hunting, I went so deep that all the knowledge I learned became baseline. I assumed everyone knew what I knew.

Turns out, they didn’t.
And that reel gained me over 1,000 followers in a few days.

Living your life, your only reference is you. You don’t realize how much **specific, earned knowledge** you have that others want.

You don’t have to be an Andrew Huberman to share information.
You’re a few steps ahead of someone in something - that’s who your content is for.

### 3. The Content ladder: Signal → Scale

I love systemizing, so I created this lightweight flow I’m starting to follow — a signal-based approach to content creation:

1. **Threads/X posts** – lowest effort, test ideas
2. **Short-form videos** – expand on what hits
3. **Long-form YouTube** – build on the proven winners

It’s MVP’s all the way down — text post → short-form → long-form.

## Things I Would’ve Done Differently

**Stop Overpolishing**
I spent over an hour editing the “Avoiding a Common Interview Mistake” reel.
Meanwhile, the “3 Tips I Wish I Knew” one took 15 minutes and performed 10x better.

Done is better than perfect.
Content rewards high volumes of good more than it does low volumes of high polish.

**Stop Fearing Monetization**

I keep telling myself, “It’s too early to sell. I haven’t earned the right yet.”
But that came from fear — not strategy.

I didn’t want to be a “grifter.” I didn’t want to be cringe.
I haven’t yet created anything with real stakes.

I realized: you don’t need to “sell” to make money.
You just need to **be transparent** about your offer and test if people are willing to pay.

Even a $5 micro-offer would’ve shown me what resonated.
I say I believe in creating stakes — but this week, I didn’t do that.

And the time to hit $1,000 is slipping by.

**This week, I made my first real money online.**

$319 to be exact.
From a digital product I made myself, in public, from scratch.

At the start of this week, I was doubting everything.
_What if I go 50 days without a single sale?_
The only thing I could do was keep following my north star: provide value.
To do that, I had to keep shipping.

## Day 16 (4/16/25) - The Launch

I came up with a new product: [The Job Offer System](https://jimtang.io/job-offer-system-purchase).
A collection of everything I wish I had before I started job hunting—
Resume frameworks, interview prep, negotiation scripts.
The kind of thing that would’ve saved me weeks of second-guessing.

I’d gotten burned for building before validating in the past with [SwipeIQ.io](http://SwipeIQ.io).
This time, I was doing it different.
No coding. No full build. Just a quick landing page and a preorder link.

I priced it at $29, and launched the preorder.
Post-preorder launch? **0 sales.**

My content growth was slowing.
I hadn’t made a cent after 16 days.
My jaw was swollen to hell from wisdom teeth extractions.
I could barely walk after a grueling first marathon.

I was tired.

That night, after I exported the above video, this showed up in my inbox:

_No fucking way._

## Day 21 (4/20/25) - Validation

Today, as I write this, I’ve made 11 sales.
$319 in gross volume.

Real money. Real customer feedback. Maybe I’m not crazy after all.

I didn’t just earn $319.
I broke the belief that I had nothing of value to sell.
That’s the part no one talks about.
The voice that says: “Who are you to sell something?”
I can’t say how/where this challenge will end.
But this week, I stopped being a person waiting for permission.

### Why $29?

1. **I needed proof that someone would actually pay for a product that didn’t even exist yet.**
2. **Imposter syndrome:** “Who are you to charge for this?”

### The biggest truth I learned this week:

A product can contain $10K in value…
But if nobody knows about it?
If nobody believes it can help them?

**It’s worth nothing.**

**In Week 1**, I stumbled into content creation after quitting my $350K job at Google.
**Week 2**, I started poking around for what to sell. Ironically, I found signal in career help.
**This week**, I doubled down on that signal — and committed to monetizing.

After a week of nonstop content, coding, and writing, a marathon, and a wisdom teeth extraction…
I’ve made real money online.

## Lessons Learned

### 1. Just launch

Every breakthrough for me has come from prioritizing speed over perfection:

- My content
- This newsletter
- The Job Offer System
- Even the marathon I ran this week

I used to live in “sandbox mode” — paralyzed by trying to choose the “right” path.
Now? I try, then I iterate.

I planned my exit from Google with this idea: Launch 30 SaaS in 3 years.
I built SwipeIQ.
SwipeIQ flopped.
Content hit, so SaaS took a backseat.
Tried fitness content. Tried career content — it hit.
So I built the Job Offer System.
And here we are.

All in 21 days.
It took me a year to even commit to trying entrepreneurship.

### 2. Don’t fear selling

For the longest time, I associated selling with being a “guru” or “grifter.”
I didn’t want to be that guy.

But my psychologist said something that stuck:

**You can’t control how people interpret your offer. You can only be transparent.**

I was arrogant to think I could be the arbiter of how someone interpreted my offers, my products.

All I can do is present the facts.
The decision is up to them.

### 3. Value is invisible until you show it.

The most important lesson I learned.

This is true for resumes (I talk about it in the Job Offer System).
It’s true for products.

People won’t “just get it.” You have to show them.
**Thursday and Friday**, I made sales because I promoted the Job Offer System on Instagram.
**Saturday?** 0 promotion. 0 sales.
**Sunday?** 3 more sales — I demoed the product in my Day 20 reel.

## Behind the Build

I built v1 of the Job Offer System in 4 days.

The first commit, 4 days ago.

3,435 lines of code in 4 days.

I committed to building a business solo, at least for the first arc.

The First Dollar Feels Like a Lie. Week 3 of 7


## “Welcome to Google!”

I still remember the Gmail notification bubble.

I did it. I was 23 years old, and I made it.

A week later, I opened the offer email: $226,260.
I felt the butterflies again. I was going to move out of my parents’ house to go live in NYC.

Money. Prestige. Comfort. The big city.

I did it.

### May 2024

I had the girlfriend. The job. The apartment. Two cats. A $7,000 projector + speaker setup. Newest iPhone. Apple Watch. MacBook. Most of all, I had made my parents proud.

A good life.

Every day, I repeated the same mantra:
“I have a good life. Everything anyone could ever want.”

But in the dull, quiet hours behind my work monitors, and in the Google cafeteria with endless food, something inside me — a deep, black mass — was always there.

I tried to bury it. “I have a good life. Everything anyone could ever want.”

… Who is “anyone”?

Right before my girlfriend moved in, I broke up with her—not because I didn’t love her, but because I couldn’t face myself.

I was a broken man who took broken actions which were born from broken thoughts.

The rest of 2024 was a desperate attempt to fix myself.

Therapy. Journaling. Half-marathon training.
A 10-day silent meditation retreat. Dr. K videos. Body recomposition.

From the outside, I looked like a high-performance hustler.
On the inside, I was frantic—racing to prove I wasn’t broken.
That I could fix whatever was wrong with me.

But what was wrong with me?

During the meditation retreat, I was no one.
My job at Google didn’t matter. I just was.
My ego-and fear-dissolved.

After more therapy and introspection I realized:

Fear got me into Google.
Fear kept me there.
Fear steered me.

I had a good life.
But I wasn’t driving.
As I came to terms with this, I started to fantasize about escape.

Then a week came where I spiraled.
I didn’t care about waking up anymore.
I imagined buying a gun.

That very moment I realized I had nothing left to lose.
I’m going to steer my own ship - consequences be damned.

I filed for leave.
If it wasn’t approved, I would quit right then.
It got approved.

One month later, here we are.

### 1. Build in Public. Crosspost Everything.

I posted 10+ tweets per day for a month on X. I have 75 followers.
I reposted a single Instagram post to Threads. Got 3,000+ followers.

Same with short-form.

- TikTok: Few-thousand views
- YouTube Shorts: 100 views
- Instagram Reels: 500K+ views

Moral: Don’t assume you know where your audience lives. I thought it was X. It was instagram. Ship everywhere. Signal will find you.

### 2. Pivot & Adapt

In my Day 2 video I said I’d focus on swipeiq.io for the next 5 days.
Day 3, SwipeIQ gained over 20 users. That’s 18 more than I gained after a week of reddit promo and cold DM’s
So I pivoted my focus into audience-building.

If I had continued building swipeiq, I would not have captured emails, I would not have leverage, and I would not have set myself up for distribution for future SaaS.

### 3. Build Authentically

Don’t chase fast money. Build trust.

I almost tried shilling SwipeIQ too early.
I’m so glad I didn’t.

Would’ve destroyed any semblance of personal brand.
I would’ve been playing a short-term game in a race to the bottom.
Most of all, I would’ve compromised my own integrity.

## What I Would’ve Done Differently

### 1. Launched the email list on Day 1

I launched the swipeiq.io waitlist landing page before I actually built the logic.
I failed to do this on my IG with the email list and likely missed a lot of people who really resonated—and wanted to stay connected, get deeper insights, or follow more closely.

### 2. Just ship it

I spent so long worrying about protecting swipeiq from bots and spam, tweaking the UI to get it just right.
When I launched? Crickets.

Same with content.
I was waiting to be “ready” for video content. I was “warming up” with tweets for weeks.
I filmed on a random Sunday. I sucked. But it went viral. Product market fit.

Perfect conditions don’t exist. Starting is the perfect condition.

### 3. Stop Resisting What I Already Knew

I spent the first few days of this challenge thinking I was an engineer who happened to be documenting. 3 days in, I still kept trying to force the SaaS thing.

But I was ignoring the obvious:

All my traction, all my signal, all the emotional resonance… came from the story I was telling. From me.

Still, I resisted.
I didn’t want to be “just another content creator.”
I wanted to stay pure. Be the serious SaaS builder. The software engineer.
That identity felt safer. More legitimate. More respectable.

But…
I’ve always wanted to transmit my worldview.
That’s why I looked up to people like Naval, Chris Williamson, Alex Hormozi.

So why was I trying to pretend I didn’t want to try content?

Because I thought SaaS was my medium.
Because I didn’t think I had earned it yet.
Didn’t think I was “ready”.
Didn’t think I had the right to speak with conviction.

If you’re reading this, ask yourself:

What part of your life have you been resisting even though you know it deep down?

What are you clinging onto because it feels “safe” or “valid”?

What signals are you ignoring - because it doesn’t match your plan?

If you’re stuck, maybe it’s not because you don’t know what to do, but because you’re afraid to admit it.

This coming week, I’m not resisting anymore. I’m owning my desire to speak my truth.

How I used it this week: ChatGPT was honestly my consultant, coach, and magic mirror. Believe it or not, I started this mailing list because it suggested it!

Made shipping SwipeIQ in under 4 weeks possible. I’m a believer in shipping fast. This helps you do exactly that.

The biggest time-saver for me is having it ideate your design. If you’re not a designer and are constrained on time, just prompt it with the theme and style you envision for your site/app and iterate.

How I used it this week: I converted SwipeIQ from its paid model to free in just 3 hours using Cursor. If you’re an engineer and know how to prompt it, it saves you from manually writing entire code blocks with just one sentence.

Burning it down in public: the real reason I'm leaving my 'perfect' life behind.

I'm leaving my $350K job to make $1K online. Week 1 of 7


I can tell you exactly what I was doing ten years ago on this day. For 17-year-old me, each school day was the same formula. Chronically sleep deprived, I drifted from classroom to classroom, eyes flicking between the clock and the backs of my eyelids. If there was one perk to being Chinese American, it was the knowledge that I could always pull out the race card if a teacher called me out for dozing off. No reason to pay attention during class, really. Because I was destined for more than this. They'd see.

I was a mediocre student by East Asian standards. Mostly A's, some B's, and the occasional C. But that was fine, because I wasn't trying. I had other problems too like overeating, severe social anxiety, and a terrible case of acne, but again, I wasn't really trying. Someday I would rise to the occasion and _try_. I'd accomplish things left and right and I would stand on my pedestal of achievements knowing all I had to do was try. That day was inevitable, so it didn't have to be that day. Or the next one either.

In eighth period, the hour and minute hand would miraculously find their way to 2:45PM. The sweet, long tone of the final bell would ring across the halls.

Arriving home I headed straight to the basement, flicking on my dual monitors and turning on my custom built gaming PC. Cooling fans and RGB lights came to life. On a good day, Dad would still be at work and Mom would be out shopping for groceries. On those days, I had the freedom to do what I wanted to do without judgment for a few short hours. Stimulatory oblivion.

The ritual begins. Open LoL. Talk shit with my friends on Skype. Queue up. Put homework -to be ignored- on the desk to feel productive. Squeeze in as many games as possible. Parents are home now. Queue up. Yelling at me to stop playing games. Scramble upstairs and wolf down dinner that's gone cold. Grab chips, pretzels, candy, then head back down to the basement. Parents are mad. Argue while gaming. Why can't they just leave me alone for once? I'm going to be great eventually so just let me be. Play more League than I even want to to prove a point. Parents go to bed. Finally, freedom. One last game. Midnight. I have homework due in 2 days. But I can't end on a loss. Winners don't end on a loss. Queue up. 1AM. Exit out of League. Porn to unwind. Time for bed. Late-night hunger so I prepare more snacks. Eat while I watch YouTube or anime. Brush my teeth while watching anime. Watch anime in bed. 2AM. Getting tired, but the freedom of the night is precious. Just one more episode. 2:30AM. Just one more episode. 3AM. My eyes can barely stay open. Maybe just one more episode. 8:00AM. Dad is waking me up. Too tired to try today. Go to school. Repeat.

Looking back at my own decade of transformation, this quote resonates deeply with the unexpected journey I've taken.

### Where I am now

Google software engineer. 1,000 pound club and 1:32 half marathon. Overcome social anxiety. Achievements from the last 10 years that 17 year old Jim would be thrilled about. In high school, I was in a negative spiral, falling deeper and deeper into despair with each passing day. Depriving myself of sleep caused poor school performance. Poor school performance prompted escapism through video games, processed foods, and pornography. Escapism led to sleep deprivation - and the cycle continued.

The first pushback against this momentum came when I resolved to lose weight. I did it completely wrong, but my feet had started walking in the right direction. Wanting to lose weight led to lifting. Lifting led to discipline as well and forming the bond with my now closest friends. One of these close friends landed a great new job during the pandemic which inspired me to begin job hunting. The discipline from lifting carried over into interview prep which ultimately landed me my job at Google. The job at Google provided the financial stability to finally address problems like acne, diet, and sleep. Fixing these problems led to growing confidence which led to going on dates and meeting my then-girlfriend. And the breakup led to introspection which led to therapy, meditation, and the culmination of the thoughts in this blog post.

### Where I'm going

When you "have it good", it becomes easy to bury dissatisfaction under the comforts of life. For me, that was the cushy big tech job, the decent physique, the carefree relationship, etc. Maybe the job is entirely uninspiring, maybe I didn't really reach my fitness goals, and maybe the relationship is missing a few things, but life was good enough. After all, many people would love to be in this position. Desiring more would surely be tasteless avarice.

At some point, consciously or not, I looked back and saw the endless hallway of closed doors behind me. Possibilities that were once abundant had leaked through the cracks of my fingers like fine grains of sand as I mistook movement for progress. In craving extrinsic validation and in fear of my heart's yearning, I had buried my soul.

In the past months, I deeply examined what my 17 year old self envisioned for his future. He had no idea of the specifics of his perceived destiny, but the essence of his desire feels crystal clear. I mapped that essence into practical and measurable goals:

- Health
  - Get jacked: 180lbs @12% body fat
  - Great cardio: Run the Boston marathon & achieve a 65 VO2max
- Wealth
  - Financial independence: $50M net worth
  - Work freedom: Location independence & self-defined hours
- Mind
  - Self love: Feel undeniable self-love daily
  - Mindfulness: Experience reality as it is 24/7
- Relationships
  - Life partner: Find and commit to a life partner
  - Family: Have two kids & see family at least bi-weekly
  - Friends: See friends at least bi-weekly

Having defined these goals, the question becomes how to make them into reality. Dreams without execution remain fantasies, and my 17-year-old self was a master of fantasy without follow-through. This time will be different—here's how I'll approach the journey.

### The method

Clear-cut goals both remind me of the destiny I imagined for myself as well as provide me a framework for attacking life. I want to be 180lbs at 12% body fat, meaning I'm going to have to put on about 15 pounds of muscle. If I want to put on 15 pounds of muscle, I better lift on a regimented schedule and eat enough protein daily. I want to have a $50M net worth, meaning I either have to work corporate until I'm over 60 years old, or give my all into entrepreneurship. I want to feel undeniable self-love so I better continue to do therapy and work on my internal state daily. While life is a series of closing doors, non-negotiable goals provide a framework for mass-eliminating doors not to walk through and highlighting the ones to enter.

So why have I gotten on a soapbox to preach all this self-obsessed nonsense on this personal website? To be honest, it is really all for myself so that:

- I have a solid definition of where I want to go.

- I track my progress.

- I have a sense of accountability.

The existence of this post explicitly defines my goals, erasing any ambiguity that I could use to fall short. I plan to post weekly updates for now to track progress on each goal, so that I have a record of causes and effects. And doing this all publicly -even if no one reads it- keeps me accountable for when I inevitably lose motivation. Finally, one ancillary hope is that someone may find value towards their own journey in observing mine, just as I have with so many others.

### Closing remarks

In my final years of high school, I remember the debaucherous routine that I depicted above. But I also remember driving around the small-town roads with my best friend, getting our favorite Jersey Mike's orders, pretending we knew what we were doing at Planet Fitness, and having weekend late-night conversations in my parents' 15 year old Toyota Camry with the sunroof down and chairs fully reclined, looking at the stars. I remember the crackling voices of old men on the radio talking stocks, resting my eyes as my Dad drove me to school. Under my fingertips I feel the worn out pearls of my alto saxophone in the band room where for a moment, my fatigue took a back seat to the distraction of playing music. I think our hearts naturally push us towards our true selves. Sometimes, we need that fire at our heels to get us moving. As we navigate, I hope that we always remember that to simply live is also enough.
